Expansion of tourism is effective for ensuring national security.

Esfandiyar Rahim-Mashaei, vice president and head of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO), made the above remark while speaking at the photo exhibition themed Wonders of Iranian Tourism at Sa'dabad Museum.

Rahim-Mashaei expressed hope that a day would come when photo exhibitions about Iran's tourism attractions and cultural heritage could be held concurrently in 100 spots of the world.

Huge Potentials
Referring to the huge efforts of enemies in presenting a distorted image of Islam, the ICHHTO chief said, "Our duties to withstand global endeavors for presenting a faulty image of Islam. One of the least costly ways is by providing the people of the world with the opportunity to see Iran and speak to its people."

Rahim-Mashaei noted that Iran needs security and calm in order to tap its huge potentials in a favorable manner.

Stressing the importance of protecting cultural heritage, he said this is not possible without first understanding the value of historical monuments and relics.

"Since Iran's historical and natural attractions cannot be safeguarded without the participation of all strata and without their constant supervision, we must spare no efforts in promoting the culture of recognizing and respecting all our assets," he said.

Rahim-Mashaei emphasized that tourism has numerous benefits, the most important of which is the familiarization of various social strata with the country's natural and historical potentials.
"As a nation that has made progress at the global level after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, especially in recent years, we need our national pride to rely on generation of knowledge. We must look back at history to realize what high capacities and potentials we possess," he said.

Domestic Promotion
Speaking at the same event, Mohammad Sharif Malekzadeh, deputy head of ICHHTO, said tourism attractions in the past few years were limited to a few provinces such as Mazandaran, Gilan, Isfahan, Shiraz and Khorasan Razavi.

"It is much more appropriate if we promote the unique attractions that exist in various parts of the country and which are not even recognized by their own residents. For example, Sistan-Baluchestan, which is viewed as a deprived region, has many unique natural attractions that are still unknown to many people," he said.
Malekzadeh noted that Iran's tourism attractions are the gift of God.

"We must try to promote the wonders of Iran so that Iranians know what attractions exist in their neighborhoods, villages or provinces," he said.
Hadi Moqaddasi, a member of the Majlis tourism faction, said although Iran's population accounts for 1 percent of the global population, it ranks among the top 10 countries in terms of historical attractions and five top countries in terms of natural attractions.

"The entry of each foreign tourist to Iran generates job opportunities for seven people," he said.

Moqaddasi also said that Iran should not merely rely on oil revenues and must utilize tourism potentials to generate further income.
