Iran displays dozens of items of the Safavid king, Shah Abbas I, in an exhibition that opened Tuesday at the British Museum in London.

Deputy Head of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization (CHTHO), Hamid Baqaie, the Curator of Iran's National Museum, Mohammad Reza Mehrandish, the Iranian Ambassador to Britain, Rasoul Movahedian and the former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw attended the opening ceremony.

A total of 200 items, including Chinese porcelains, silk carpets, illustrated manuscripts, silk, calligraphy and several volumes of the Holy Qur'an will be on display at the fair. Iran will showcase 53 items of Safavid heritage at the four-month exhibition.

Iran's National Museum, the British Museum and several governmental and private collectors have loaned items for the exhibit.

Shah Abbas I, who ruled Iran from 1587 - 1629 CE, is known as one of the country's most influential kings, a great patron of the country's art.

Iran's Cultural Heritage Organization has held several cultural exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Britain, Japan, Mexico and South Korea over the past few years.

Iran is the home of one of the world's oldest civilizations, with urban settlements dating back to 5000 BCE.

The British Museum had previously held an exhibition about the Achaemenid Empire called 'Forgotten Empire: the World of Ancient Persia.'
