Taxi from IKIA airport to Amir Kabir street in Tehran (hotel)

Taxi from IKIA airport to Amir Kabir street in Tehran (hotel) in forum Iran Travel Tips, Advice and Information.
Salam ,
I will be landing in Tehran early in the morning (4:00 am)and from what i've read there is no public transportation from IKIA airport to downtown Tehran ,even if there was i don't think anything would be operating so early in the morning ?

So that means i have to take a taxi to my hotel ,i've been to quite a few countries and i've had my share of bad experiences with taxi drivers trying to over charge me from the airport ,and i'd rather avoid any of these circumstances if i can by having a bit of knowledge prior to my arrival .

What would be the typical taxi fare cost me (rough estimate)from IKIA airport to my hotel on Amir Kabir street in Tehran ?My experience has taught me to negotiate the fare before on an agreed price ,and give a small tip once i arrive at my destination ,is this the general practice for hiring a taxi in Tehran or do the taxis use meters for the fare .

Dastet darnakone

-Jarkko Inkovaara

Question about Persian language

Question about Persian language in forum Iran Travel Tips, Advice and Information.
Hello, I was wondering if you could help me understand something about the Persian language. How do you way "come" and "go" in Persian? Is there any difference between how you say "come" and "go" in Persian than in English. In English, you use "come" if there is motion towards the speaker and "go" if the motion is away from the speaker. Does it work the same way in Persian or are there multiple meanings? Thanks

Recommended: Caspiantrek & Beautiful traditional guesthouse of "Khoone Geli" in Tonekabon

Recommended: Caspiantrek & Beautiful traditional guesthouse of "Khoone Geli" in Tonekabon Last autumn we visited Iran which became one of our most beautifull travels. We would like to recommend everyone who is going to visit Iran to do a trek through the Alamut Valley and stay in the beautiful traditional guesthouse of "Khoone Geli" in forum Iran Travel Tips, Advice and Information.
Last autumn we had one of our best travels ever: To Iran. What an amazing country: the impressive sights and environment, but especially the welcoming people stole our hearts.

We would like to tell you about a man named Farzin Malaki who gave us the best days of our trip during our one month travel through Iran last autumn 2010. Farzin lives in Tonekabon near the Caspian sea and delivers treks through the Alamut valley region (Through CaspianTrek.com) and has a beautifull traditional guesthouse (Khoone Geli) which services mouthwatering (traditional Iranian and vegetarian) food!
We did a 2 days trek through the Alamut valley with Farzin and a guide and stayed for 3 days in his guesthouse "Khoone Geli" afterwards where he showed us around Tonekabon. We are very enthousiastic about both his personality and services and therefore we want to tell you guys about him. He is not in the LP (yet).

Farzin
Let us first tell about this special man: He was born and raised Iranian but worked as a doctor for 20 years in both London and Spain. After 20 years he decided to wanted to go back to his homeland since he missed it's beautifull culture and environment. Farzin is very passionate about the environment and Iranian culture and wants to preserve both. In an attempt to preserve both, he set up his own Guesthouse which he built himself from the bottom with local materials (mud and wood) in traditional style and he started organizing treks through the beautifull alamut valley.

We we're very glad to meet a man like this since he cookes delicious vegetarian, traditional Iranian and organic dishes (which is really a relief for 2 eco-obsessive vegetarians like us in a country full of kebab-restaurants ;)) and we had tons of talks about all kinds of things like the environment, politics, Iranian culture, western culture etc. Farzin is a very smart intelligent guy and speaks perfectly English (with a brittish accent ;)).

Trek through Alamut valley
First we did a 2 days trek through the valley starting out in Pichebon Hamlet, staying the night in mudbrick village of Kalumlat and ending in Maran. The trek was awesome with beautifull views of the valleys, the interesting talks and stories about Iran with Farzin and the amazing traditional mud-brick villages with welcoming locals who hardly see tourists. Also did Farzin and the guide treat us with good (vegetarian) food/drinks and carried the tents and other gear.

Ghoone Keli
This guesthouse Farzin owns, is built with his own bear hands with local natural material (mud + wood) in traditional style. It's really a beautifull quiet place with bright colored carpets on the floor and walls. The best food we had in Iran was at Farzin's place: he cooks traditional Iranian dishes using local, fresh and organic ingredients. We took a lot of recipies with us back to the Netherlands and are still preparing lots of it every month :)

Farzin is obsessed with the environment and he is determined to have everything ecological in and around his house. His huge garden is full of (organic grown) crops like tea, oranges and sharon fruits.

The 2 days we had in his guesthouse Farzin showed us around in Tonekabon, taking us to the hot springs, the caspian sea and a pottery family who we're very warm and welcoming and inviting us for dinner.

We made a selection of the photos of the time we spent with Farzin to give you an impression:
http://koekje.cjb.net/photos/caspiantrek/

We recommend everyone who is visiting Iran to take a visit to Farzin's guesthouse or do a trek through the beautifull Alamut Valley with it's untouched villages.

Contact info:
www.caspiantrek.com
info@caspiantrek.com
Phone: +98 912 291070

Best regards,
Jochem & Cecile

question about long hair for guys traveling in Iran

question about long hair for guys traveling in Iran in forum Iran Travel Tips, Advice and Information.
Hi,

I intend on entering Iran sometime in the next few months, I have already got my visa and everything arranged.

I have been told (by worried and paranoid parents) that my long hair (i am a guy by the way) will possibly be a problem when traveling. I was wondering if anybody has had any 1st hand experience with this?

I guess maybe i should give a better description of myself if it helps. I have reasonable long, curly hair (looks a bit messy to be honest, not nice and straight), which is not to long as it is shoulder length, just quiet long so it looks a bit rough, wild and uncut. I also have quiet a beard, its been growing on the road for about 4 months, and the hair 8 months. I'm a red head, with pale skin, so i REALLY stand out as well when traveling in these countries. I am Australian (not that i think that really makes any difference, but you never know...)

maybe i should also say that lots of my travel is quiet off the beaten track, i am often going away from the main tourist places, to experience a more authentic feel for countries.

so, if anybody knows if this would cause any problems with either the local people, or from the strict government, please let me know of your thoughts and experiences!

Cheers
My Iranian passport has expired and I live in the uk. When I telephoned the consulate i was told to obtain a renewal I need my birth certificate but this has been long since lost and I know it takes forever to obtain a new one. When I looked on the iranian foreign office website there is no mention of a birth certificate being required. Does anyone know which one is correct? as I am totally confused. Thanking you all in advance
Hi

I was wondering if anyone out there knows how long it takes to get a iranian passport.
The process began from July 2009 and I still don't know if the shenasnameh is done or not.
But after the shenasnameh is done, how long does it take for me to get the passport?
I'm iranian but born in Denmark. I have never been to Iran before and never had a iranian passport either.
Another thing I was wondering about is, if I can just apply for a visa even if my parents are from Iran?
I mean as I'm born in Denmark, couldn't I go to Iran just as a tourist?

I appreciate all comments and answers.
Hi!

We are going to be visiting Iran in April. In order to get visa I need a reservation confirmation from hotel. Since we'll be arriving to Tehran and taking to train to Kerman on the same day, the first night in Iran will be spent on train. The second in Kerman. I have contacted Akhavan Hotel via email twice, but so far no feedback from them. Can anybody suggest another hotel in Kerman in the same price range with whom it is possible to do reservations via email? Thanks a lot!

Greetings to Iran from Estonia :)

Is it always this hard for Americans to get a visa?

 Hello,

My name is Camron and I am a 36 year old American, and I would like to travel to Iran in May 2010. I have a Persian father and European mother, and have not been to Iran since about 1976, when I was a young child and before the revolution. I am trying to get either a new Iranian passport or a visa to travel there in May.

I have my father's documents, including his passport from after the revolution. I also have my mother's passport which also has me on it, though that is from before the revolution.

Do you know if it is possible to get the necessary documents in time to travel there next May? I have tried calling the Iranian Interests Section http://www.daftar.org but that has not been much help. I need someone that can help me with this. Please let me know if you know anyone or if you have any advice.

Many thanks,
Camron Assadi
Hi guys,

I plan to travel to Iran and Armenia, Yerevan in summer. And I want to find a good hostel in both countries.

I found this one - Rafael Hostel in Yerevan, Armenia . Has anyone stayed there? Is it really good? They say they have great hospitality and friendly atmosphere there. http://hostels.am

They say the Hostel is located in the city center, nearly all main places of interest are in walking distance. In 10 minutes walk you will reach Republic Square. There are shops and supermarkets close to it. Is it right?

Please advice me some hostels also in Iran
Thanks in advance

JALAL MEHDIZADEH (guide) unacceptable behaviour (also owner of JALAL GUESTHOUSE)

JALAL MEHDIZADEH (guide) unacceptable behaviour (also owner of JALAL GUESTHOUSE) I recommend you NOT TO TAKE HIM AS A GUIDE or use his guesthouse in forum Reviews for hotels, travel agents....
Recently I had the great chance to visit for the first time in my life Iran. The visit was full of great memories the best one of which, the warmness of the iranian people towards the foreigner.

Said that I want to report, because I think it is my duty and I think it might be of your interest, about one incident with one "experienced local guide" in Kerman, which resulted in a very very bad and uncomfortable experience. That concerns the "guide" JALAL MEHDIZADEH and the summary of the situation that happened is as follows:

I knew about Jalal through the Lonely Planet bookguide (whom I wrote too, to report about him). I made reservation in advance to stay at his guesthouse called "Jalal Gueshouse" (11 Gharbi 3 St., off Ashura square). I also wanted to visit Rayen and Mahan around Kerman and also the Kaluts, so I decided when I arrived to Kerman to ask him for guiding to those places and also to look other guides and compare prices and quality.

As it was night on my arrival on the first day at Kerman, and he told me all the prices were the same in Kerman, we agreed to go next day together Rayen and Mahan and maybe the day after to Kaluts. On next morning (second day), on my visit to Rayen and Mahan, it was not him but a driver who could speak little english (instead of Jalal) and knew nothing of the places we visited. So that "experienced driver-guide who speaks english and have great experience which will go instead of me" (Jalal said), turned to be a person who did not even visited one of the places in 10 years and could explain nothing about them... and even got lost in such small place. Feeling that all what Jalal told me the night before could also not be true, I decided to make some phone calls (to other guides and agencies) and go to the Kaluts on next day with another guide and a driver for half Jalal's price.

Knowing about that when I came back to his guesthouse, Jalal all of a sudden, decided that those "fixed prices, all the same in Kerman" was a lie not necessary to be told again and reduced his price, but I refused to go with him since he was still more expensive but specially because I trusted him no more. He even wanted to charge me some money for "having rented a car for the Kaluts too" (probably another lie) but I refused to pay for something I was not going to do with him. Also he started to harass me with questions about whom I was going with, why, about all the "money he lost because of me"... and he started swearing about one fellow guide from Kerman with whom he was shure I was going with: "He always do the same, talk bad about me and steal my customers!!". That was completely nonsense and in fact, that other guide he was swearing about, Hossein Vatani, was a nice man who told me when I called him (among other agencies) that "If you stay with Jalal I prefer not to take you on trip, so that he doesn't start blaming me...". Indeed Mr.Vatani knew Jalal well, but anyway he was blamed for nothing, since I went to Kaluts with a third guide, but I refused to tell Jalal with whom (even if he continued harassing me about the issue), since I had to give him no explanations.

That same 3rd day, at night, after coming back from the Kaluts, Jalal continued on his "war" and decided that I was gonna have to pay for some services at his home-guesthouse that he had offered to me for free on my arrival, including internet (2 hours...) and laundry (1 t-shirt and 2 underwear...). I decided to pay "such peanuts" to avoid further discussions.

But then again he told that I had to pay him for his pick-up at the airport the night that I arrived (another thing he had offered me for free) and tried to charge me double of the normal price (which by then I knew since I asked before, as I saw already that he wanted to "steal" as much of my money as possible from everything he thought I could pay extra). Finally I paid him an intermediate price again to avoid more discussions. Even before to go to sleep (I was leaving on next morning) he told me "for what I had to host you" (well, I was paying him the same price than a 3 star hotel in the city that I checked, so he was speaking again nonsense) "if you didn't do the trips with me" (another lie since I did one and just the second I decided not to do it because he was liying and "stealing" to me...) "fot that I don't need to have anyone at my home!!" (well, he has a guesthouse and that is why I paid him for when I arrived to his guesthouse... nothing forces me to take him as a guide, that is my free choice)... and so on and so on...

I could add more and more details, but with that of the story is enough. PLEASE IF YOU REALLY WANT GOOD ADVICE, ON KERMAN LOOK FOR ANY OTHER GUIDE BUT HIM... HE IS SUCH A MORON...

SERGI ALBERT
Barcelona (SPAIN)
