Iranian ideas
Hi, my boyfriend is a photojournalist who is thinking of doing a trip to Iran fairly soon to have a look around before Bush decides it's the next target on his 'War Against Innocents' campaign. Has anybody travelled there recently, knows anything about how easy it to travel and move about and most crucially, does anybody know of any issues or stories that are worth his looking at with a view to national newspaper exposure across Europe?

Maria

I knew loads of journalists while I was in the Middle East and they all relied on some bird to post on forums like this to assist them in looking for stories.
Hello Maria,

My name is Sebastian from the Netherlands. I am writing from Tehran right now. I spend 2 months here and really enjoyed it a lot. Country and people are as safe as the kitchen where mom bakes cookies. no, just kidding. but it's really worth a visit. As far as stories. depends what. Nuclear facilities would be old news, but what about the people and habits of Iran. Nomad living in Lorestan and Baluchistan. Or interview younger people about their view of modern life mixed with islamic culture, the country and the West. Most of them are very happy to express their opinion. But it's best to get into contact via a local guide. For example Ali in Tehran. contact: S.ALI.KASHFI@gmail.com or tel. 0098 (0)9329240622

When your friend visits Yazd (most conservartive, religious place in Iran) a beautifull mudd brick city in the desert. be sure to stay at the Silk Road hotel (www.silkroadhotel.ir ). There the owner, another Ali is very helpfull.

take care!

greetz from Iran!
Sebastian
"Innocents" don't fund international terrorism, disparage the Holocaust, and threaten to "wipe" a country off the map while secretly developing nuclear weapons. Sure, the rank and file Iranian may be kind hearted toward a leftist apologist such as yourself (Inversely, the Nazis were quite friendly to Lindberg). I am not going to defend Bush, because his biggest mistake was making the ability to take military action against Iran less feasible, thereby emboldening them. And don't forget those nukes they are building can't hit the U.S.( at least without internation shipment), but they can hit Europe. Alas, your boyfriend will inevitably become a media whore, because if he has the balls or inclination to write any thing critical, Iran won't let him and Europe won't want to hear it anyways.

Your request for travel recommendations is as transparent as the search of the Iranians for new power sources. I recommend DELETION of this topic.
HistoriCAL, instead of slagging off [with incomplete and neo-con mis-information] places you've never visited, why don't you visit Iran for yourself and see what every traveller there has seen?

I'd visit Iran in a minute, but the Iranian regime won't let me, it is commmitted to my destruction.
Posting a question like this doesn't really make him stand out as a great "photojournalist"!! It sounds more like a bloke with a camera getting ideas out of the air to me....

My advice : Tell him to learn Farsi, read, read and read about Iran/Persians from all angles and viewpoints, speak to Iranians in the UK and THEN book the tickets. There is enough shitty "journalism" around due to silly people thinking it's all action.
#5, I'm far from a neo-con, but your suggestion, even assuming that the authorities couldn't figure out the derivation of my surname, would be an immoral act (at least under the current regime in Tehran). Unlike most people here, I believe the choice of where to spend one's tourist dollars has a ethical aspect. For what its worth, I suspect that, like Lebanon, the cream of the crop of that society has emigrated anyways and I receive the blessing of interacting with them on American soil routinely. No reason to go much further on this topic, the poster is clearly a "troll."
to be honest, that sounds a bit scarry to me... I seems your friend hasn't got any idea about Iran. Going to Iran as a journalist can get kind of dangerous (remember the canadian journalist who "died" (got killed?) some years ago.) I once met a German jounalist in Iran, he lied about his profession when applying for the visa in cause he tought it was safer... I agree with #7: your friend should read.
#6, How about Iranians trying to visit Europe, or Israel? I met lots of young people when I was there, who wanted to travel just like me (and you), but either they couldn't, either they got harassed at every boarder.
#8, Why would this post be a troll? She's just asking for some ideas, not for your comments on a country you've clearly never visited. What you say is totally irrelevant and unwanted.

Maria, in some cases it's indeed better for journalists to lie about their profession, and eg say they're students. And you can probably find lots of interesting stories amongst young Iranian people, who will be glad to share them I think.
HistoriCAL: For starters, the majority of TT-travellers are probably of the "unwanted type" in most countries. Our "tourist dollars" tend to come in very small numbers and they are hardly a significant income-source for the Iranian(or some other totalitarian) government.

In addition; who are you to define what countries have an "ethically acceptable" rule, and how is this measured? I don't find ANY government ethically acceptable, corruption is rampant everywhere, but it appears in different ways and is linked to centuries of different traditions in different areas. You would be living in a magic kingdom of your own imagening the US gov't is "ethically correct".

It's a bit like all those travellers saying they "have no interest in going to the US", mostly based on portrayals of the country and its government. Easily forgetting that a country is so eternally much more than its president and policies. I have no qualms about going to countries whose governments might be deemed "bad" by you or anyone else. I think it is very important that people DO travel there as it is a powerful form of diplomacy between the actual people there and at home. Promote understanding between cultures, form popular opinion at home and your chances are much better at creating a better society for yourself and the country in question than sitting at home moaning about how terrible a place is.
HistoriCAL, I note you had no 'ethical' problems in visiting Israel. And you're planning to visit Turkey very soon.
Exactly WHY do Iran and Syria present you with such a moral dilemna?

'War Against Innocents'

Since when have the Taliban or Saddam Hussain been innocent

# 11 "who are you to define what countries have an "ethically acceptable" rule, and how is this measured? I don't find ANY government ethically acceptable"

You should keep your lecturing to yourself, when a government is elected by the people legitimately than they are acceptable as they are going to get.

" I think it is very important that people DO travel there as it is a powerful form of diplomacy between the actual people there and at home"

What does this mean? Why dont you go tell the people of Burma or Zimbabwe or Belarus this rubbish and see what they think
Well I am pleased to see that there are still people who wont be desguised by the USA media and want to se both sides of the argument before aquiring an opinion about an issue as delicate as the one before us. Althoug I also believe it is an important decission to make going to Iran at this moment when the athmosphere is tense. Maybe you should be better informed , not just about the safest way to travel , also about their costumes and tranditions.
Sebastian,
