I have never been to Iran, I am half Iranian, my dad is Iranian, mother is American, I am 26 year old female and have long wanted to visit the country. My father has traveled back and forth several times over the years and really hasn't pushed me to go, but has asked me. I have recently been much more excited about going and seeing a lot of my family members and the country's culture, historical sites and everything. My dad has just returned recently and is really thinking me and my brother should come and we'd have a good time. My Farsi is poor to fair, but that is besides the point, I just want to feel safe in that my brother and I can travel there and back with no problem. With all the talk through the media here and "saftey warnings" for traveling to Iran, especially for and Iranian American such as my brother and me, I have to admit, it sets my excitment back a little. I am ready to go and will definately use this website as a helpful tool! Please answer as best as possible my following questions:
* Do I NEED to have an Iranian Passport to travel there since my father is Iranian? * Is it typical to have problems entering/exiting the country due to U.S. citizenship or any other reason? * This is for my brother: He is 27, not in college, and again Iranian last name, however he's never been to Iran; will the Army service even be an issue for him? Thanks I'd appreciate some advice and info!! |

Hey Elly,
You don't know how long I've been searching the web with the same exact concerns as you! I'm half-Iranian as well and want to go to Iran this summer. I went with my dad to Shiraz in 2000, but I haven't been back since. The whole experience was AMAZING! I expected to be discriminated against because I was half, but it seemed as if they loved me even more because I was different. My family welcomed me with open arms. There was always a dinner party I was invited to just because they wanted to celebrate my arrival. I never once felt threatened by being American born. It's important that you go to the country with an open mind. It's a lot different from what we're used to (for one, having to squat when you use the restroom..lol) When I was there, girls only wore black, capris and flip flops were out of the question, and all of your hair had to be covered. Today, from what I've seen on Bia2.com, times have definitely changed! Girls are getting high lights, wearing hollywood makeup, and even wearing tight, colorful coverups. I suppose it has to do with the increasing population of people under 35. Many love the American culture and chances are that your cousins will be asking to borrow your clothes (I gave most of my clothes away before I left...We can always buy them again in the states). Bottom line: Go To Iran! Oh! And as a bonus, because of different eating habits, I lost 30 lbs in 3 months! Another bonus, you pick up Farsi so fast. Many of the younger people speak English, but there's nothing like learning a language. Take advantage of it! Now comes the hard part. You must have an Iranian Passport to travel to Iran. The only embassy in the US is in DC. Go to www.daftar.org for a bit of information. Emailing them is the best way to get some information. They will NEVER pick up the phone. I've been put on hold for 30 minutes one time, so I just gave up. I've sent 2 emails, and have received only one response, but it's still better odds. When they replied, they said that you could go directly to the embassy to apply for your passport and with proper documentation, you could receive it same day. Otherwise, you will have to mail in the application (part of which is in Farsi...which I cannot read whatsover. my dad has helped me somewhat, but it seems like I'm on my own to figure out what to do). I'll be going to the embassy on Tuesday, so I'll let you know exactly what you'll need to apply. If you're nto in a rush, just mail in the documents. Takes 4-6 weeks approximately. I hope I've helped you out a bit. If you have any more questions, please email me! royamohebpour@gmail.com. |

Elly,
Your brother's last name won't be an issue if he enlists in the service. There are arab american high ranking officers in the service. He has the right to enlist and if his arabic is poor to fair, he can be sent to language school to bring the skills up. |

Dear all,
I had the exact experience...called the Interest Section 20 times and got to talk to them last time...they sent me an application about a month later...I completed the forms and collected all the documents and sent it back to them...they returned the package 3 times and I finally gave up...untill this website popped up on my gmail. www.Legalpersian.com...this was the end of it...they are so helpful and extremely knowledgable...it is a bit expensive, but worth every penny of it...they owner Hessam Mizrahi is an Iranian attorney who lives in DC...they obtained all of my documents (birth certificate, national ID card, passport, military card) every thing and I went and picked them all up at once in DC. It took about 3 months to get eveything done and compare to 8-15 months of the Iranian embassy was nothing... I went to Iran this January and had a wonderful time... Best, Shahrooz |
