Is Iran dangerous for westerners?
Hello,

I'm new to this forum, but I have been looking at this site for a little while and attempting to gauge my plans to travel to Iran this summer.

First up, a bit about myself, I'm Canadian 21 years old, white (not middle eastern) and a native English speaker without any experience in the Iranian language (though I plan to study a little Farsi before I go).
I'm looking to travel with my friend who is also 21, and pretty much the same as me.

I've been getting mixed results on how practical it is for someone like me to go on vacation in Iran. I've read the Canada travel advisory which places Iran at 'high travel risk', but that seems to be mainly because of the political strife in the surrounding countries, and the isolated high crime rate in the southeastern provinces.

My parents have pretty much told me not to go as its too dangerous, but based on my readings the country seems the contrary. I talked to a native Persian person, whose lived in Iran for many years, that is a friend of the family and asked him about the feasibility of us going. He basically said, while staying in the big cities like Tehran are relatively safe traveling from city to city is extremely dangerous. He also said that most Iranians can't really separate Canadians and Americans from 'westerner' and that there is animosity towards people like us in Iran. We would be subject to persecution, at much higher risk of being kidnapped, robbed etc. Also that store clerks would chop our hands off even at the thought of theft, and accusing us would be nothing since of course they hate westerners. Hearing this from a Persian makes me rethink what I need to do.

I really want to travel to Iran this summer, but two young white guys traveling alone might not be the best of ideas. Does anyone here know anything I can try to do to help, or are these warnings greatly overblown.

Thanks a lot

Hey, I'm living in New Zealand and I wanna go to Iran sometime in the future... a couple of quick questions:

One, when I mentioned to a man I know that I wanted to go to Iran, he said, "Good luck as a woman". He said Iran was really too dangerous.

I've done a bit of reading on Wikitravel and it didn't say that much about danger. How are foreign women treated in comparison to Iranian women, and in comparison to foreign men?

I'm also on prescription medicine that can't be supplied over the counter. If in Iran, I was to lose the medicine, how hard would it be to replace it?

Also, he suggested that if I wanted to go to Iran, I could take a male friend with me, as this would be safer. In some other Muslim countries, this would be illegal unless he was your father, brother or husband. What about Iran?

Hi
Iran is not dangerous at all, you can visit lonelyplanet.com to make sure how many tourists are visiting it every year and everyday!!
The only crucial point to know is that lone female visitors must be escorted with an authorized tour guide!

I'm really interested in travelling around Iran> It has so many wonderful buildings and places to see and the culture is really interesting. A lot of these posts are from a couple of years ago. What is the situation for tourists now? Im 55 years old British male looking to travel alone or perhaps with one companion for an extended period. Any advice?

Hi all,

I am from Chile, Southamerica, living in Poland.

I was looking for a special place to go and talking to my Polish friends, I said, I would love to go to Iran.

The good thing is that there is an Iranian Embassy here in Warsaw, so I will apply for the VISA.

But on the other hand, my question is, how conservative is the situation in Iran regarding religion?

I also heard that girls are very very pretty. So, "IF" I meet a nice one, how should I do or not do? What is forbidden? I read sex is illegal, but is really followed happening that young people is not having sex before the marriage?

Well, I would appreciate a response, mainly from people living there currently, Iranians.

How widely spoken is English? Any other western language? Spanish, French?

Regards

Pablo

Hi Pablo,
You can find sex before marriage a lot in Iran, but in a hidden way!!!
I'm not sure how you can do it or ask a girl to be with you, because in the hotels you can not invite a female guest to your room and it is also not safe to rent a house for foreigners unless they hire a lawyer!
The only thing is that she invites you to her own house!!
I am an american in need of a surgery that I cannot get in my country. I am in constant pain. I have been told that I have two torn ligaments in my shoulder and a separated bone. Can anyone put me in contact with a surgeon that can help me in Iran.

WorldwidePants5050@gmail.com
Can you tell me why you don't do your surgery in America which has a more improved tech in medicine???
Regarding the comment about being Jewish and visiting Iran. Iran does actually have Jews (and Christians) you know! lol they live alongside other Iranians just fine. Don’t believe Zionist propaganda, Iranians are cultured people! Look just remember if you plan to visit Tehran it’s like other cities around the world it has fashion, culture, music etc - but with Islamic rules. If you have ever met an Iranian they (without sounding racist) are very Jew like lol - in a good way smile:)

Be open minded!

Hey all

especially all iranians.

I am fr om chaptacca point, wisconsin in the states, USA. My boyfriend and I have been together for 6 months, and so to celebrate this i want to take him on a holiday, an i thought wh ere better than the middle east. because we are both really fond of cooking and eating delicious foud, and i heard that the food there is great. I thought about doing a trip to iran, so i have a couple of questions.

Someone told me that people ar a bit conservative, and so i want to know, for gay men, how can we display and celebrate our god-given love in public without offending the local crowd. That is the last thing we want to do, because we truly respect everyone out there. For example, here at home when we walk around town i often put my hand on his pert butt, or if we are sitting in a bar he will slide his hand up my shorts and squeeze my 'manhood'. Now i know that this is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, so i wasn't planning on doing that. but for example is it ok if i hold his hand, say, in a mosque, or if he nuzzles my neck while we stroll down the high street at sunset? We just want to let eeryone know that we are so in love!

let me know what you think. and greetings from the USA

Yes, I'm from the US which has excellent medical facilities. The problems is that those facilities are not available to all Americans. In this country only the wealthy have access to medical care, the poor not only have substandard care (if they're lucky to get that) usually people go without medical care in this country. Many people go without medical care in the US!!!!!

hello
I'm Tina and i'm Iranian. I want to tell you that Iran IS NOT the country that most of the people think. I know that most of the people all over the world think that Iran in a dangerous country just because of something that they heard about Iran. Iran's government has some problems with the other governments specially America's government and because of that in most of the news talks very badly about Iran. Iranians are so sad about this because they say that the new government is destroying Iran. You know, Iran is a 2000 years country and it has a strong culture. Don't see the Iranians that immigrate to your country because most of them change when they immigrate, but if you come to Iran you'll see how Iranians are good people. I don't say these just because i'm Iranian, i say these because they're reality. Iran is so beautiful and nice, specially Tehran. Tehran is one of the biggest city all over the world and it has beautiful places. Tehran's nights are famous because it's SO BEAUTIFUL. If you come to Iran i offer to you that visit Milad tower and Bame Tehran. Milade Noor, Tirazhe, and Tandis are good places for shopping. you can also visit the other towns like Shiraz, Isfahan, Gilan and the best island in iran, Kish. this island is very good for foreigner. I love Kish!
I hope that I could help you and if i had problems in my writing please excuse me
Goodbye smile;)
Hi I am Amir ,I'm iranian ,Iran is not dangrus country .you can travel all over the Iran safely .I can help you in iran :

Im dutch and live in Iran. At all here is not dangerous.
Every one has been so friendly to me and even so excited to meet with some one from europe.
Hello, I am just getting to visit Iran...I am europian, 25. Just want to make sure about how Teheran would be safe for me and if I should worry about anything (though it probably wouldn´t change anything about my decision to go there). I am sure Iran is safe for Iranians because of quite well functioning establishment (as I see it)...but would it be safe for foreigner? What is a people's oppinion about westerners (generaly I belive it is a problem for iraninan to tell whether I come from US or europe, based just on physical characteristics)? If I were at your place I wouldn´t like foreigners for all that propaganda in western TV's and sanctions applied via OSN.
